IP Search & Discovery is a powerful utility designed to determine valid IPv4 addresses on the Internet or a local area network.
Despite the advent of IPv6, IPv4 still routes most of the traffic on the Internet. IP Search & Discovery polls for active IP's that represent active connected devices, servers, switches, owned IP pools, government allocated IP pools, and other nefarious devices that have a pre-determined schedule of activity.
The Main Menu for IP Search & Discovery is very simple, below are listed the actions you can perform with the menu items.
- ⇒ Exit - Exit the program
- ⇒ Time Out - Adjust the Ping Time Out
- Value Range (50 - 500 ms)
- The default is 120 milli-seconds
- ⇒ Time Out - Adjust the Ping Time Out
- ⇒ About - Program Information screen
- ⇒ Help - This document
As IP Search & Discovery finds active IP addresses, it continuously logs the information to an HTML formatted
data file - a Search Log. The Search Log filename will have the base format of "IpSearchLog_xx.html",
where _xx will be a numbered index so as to not over-write any previous search results.
The path to the saved Search Log appears above the Search Results datagrid. The Search Log tooltip displays the full path as well.
IP Search & Discovery On Application Open
The IP Search & Discovery interface is divided into sections. The input section consists of the Start IPv4 and End IPv4 addresses, an Omit IP, and the Start Search button. A valid IP address consists of 4 octets, in other words four decimal values each with a value range of 0 to 255 and each value is seperated by a period. (0 - 255).(0 - 255).(0 - 255).(0 - 255)
To run, enter a valid starting IP address. The ending IP address must have the most significant octet larger than the correspondingstarting IP octet. The values
listed are default and are there for example. The Omit IP is the first octet value of your internal network if you have one. In other words,
my network internally has this IP <192.xxx.xxx.xxx>. Depending on the current search range this IP may or may not be included, it is there as a set and forget value
that IP Search ignores and reports on Internet IP addresses only.
Conversely, if you put in the local IP <192.0.0.0> for the Start IPv4 address, IP Search & Discovery will search the internal network for all IP connections.
The Start Search button is a toggle button. Once a search has been initiated, it will indicate that it is now the Stop Search button and if clicked will stop the current search. If the search is not halted, then IP Search & Discovery will stop once it has reached the End IPv4 address. Final data will be written to the Search Log and then the file will be closed. To initiate a new search session close and restart IP Search & Discovery. This is done to ensure all communication port processes are flushed and cleared.
The bottom portion of the IP Search & Discovery interface contains the Status Display. This is a running log of all application activity, this is mainly for informational purposes, however; if an error or problem is encountered, click the small Output button and the complete status history will be written to a file that can be sent to me for analysis and improving IP Search & Discovery.
The Ping menu option enables the user to adjust the Ping timeout value. In other words; how long to wait for a response before moving on. The time is in Milliseconds, the smaller the value the more impatient Ping becomes with waiting for a response from a remote device. The Ping Timeout value is from 50 ms to 500 ms.
Here I entered 666 for a timeout value and quickly got warned with the valid range and the value was reset to the default 120 ms.
IP Search & Discovery saves all active IP responses to the datagrid and to the Search Log as well. IP Search & Discovery tracks the following reply statuses and if true, the status and IP address will be noted in the Status Display.
- Destination Prohibited
- Source Quenched
- TTL Expired
- Unrecognized Next Header
- Parameter Problem
- Data Packet Too Big
- No Resources
- Hardware Error
- Destination Unreachable
